RV Fridge Not Cooling? Absorption Refrigerator Troubleshooting

Most RV refrigerators aren't small home fridges — they're absorption units that make cold by boiling an ammonia solution with either a propane flame or an electric heating element, then letting gravity circulate it. No compressor, almost no moving parts. That design is why they fail in ways that surprise people, and why the fix depends entirely on which half of the system quit.

Why does level matter so much?

The ammonia solution circulates by gravity through a maze of tubing. Park the rig more than a few degrees off level and the solution pools where it shouldn't, circulation stalls, and the boiler overheats — cooling stops in hours, and running it badly off level for long can permanently damage the cooling unit with internal blockages.

So before anything else: level the rig, give it 8–12 hours, and see if cold returns. Within about 3° side-to-side and 6° front-to-back is the usual tolerance — if you'd be comfortable sleeping in it, the fridge is usually happy.

Works on propane but not electric (or the other way around)

This is the most useful diagnostic in the book, because the flame and the element do the exact same job — heat the boiler. If the fridge cools fine on propane but not on shore power, the cooling unit is healthy and the problem is electric-side: usually a burned-out heating element (an inexpensive cartridge that slides into the boiler pocket) or the board/relay that powers it.

If it cools on electric but not gas, look at the propane side: a dirty burner, a spider-webbed orifice, a weak igniter, or low gas pressure. The burner assembly lives behind the lower outside access panel — with the gas off, clean the burner tube and orifice area with compressed air (never poke a wire through an orifice), check for a crisp blue flame on relight, and listen for the click of the igniter.

Airflow behind the fridge: the hidden killer

Absorption fridges dump their heat out the back, through the lower intake vent and upper roof or sidewall vent. That chimney effect only works if air can flow — and factory installs are often sloppy, with big gaps that let hot air recirculate instead of escaping.

Pull the outside access panel and look: the condenser fins at the top should have a clear path to the exhaust vent. Clear leaves and mud-dauber nests, and on hot days a pair of small 12V vent fans wired to push air up the chimney can drop food-compartment temps dramatically. If your fridge only struggles in 95°+ weather, airflow is almost always the reason.

The ammonia smell (and yellow powder) nobody wants

If you smell ammonia inside the fridge, or find yellow-green powder residue at the burner area or behind the unit, the cooling unit has cracked and leaked its charge. That's terminal — the sealed tubing can't be recharged in the field.

The choice then is a replacement cooling unit (rebuilt units bolt onto your existing cabinet), a whole new absorption fridge, or — the increasingly popular route — swapping in a 12V compressor fridge, which cools faster, doesn't care about level, and sips from the battery bank. A boiler that gurgles loudly and won't cool with no smell can also mean an internal blockage: same verdict, cooling unit's done.

Give it time — and a thermometer

Absorption cooling is slow. From warm, expect 8–12 hours to reach temperature, and up to 24 in summer heat. Load it with cold food, don't pack it so tight air can't circulate inside, and keep a $10 fridge thermometer in there — 34–40°F in the food box is the target.

Why did my RV fridge stop cooling but still runs on propane?

If the flame lights and burns steady but the box won't cool, check level first — absorption fridges circulate by gravity and stall when parked off level. Then check rear ventilation and give it 8–12 hours. If it gurgles, smells of ammonia, or shows yellow residue at the boiler, the sealed cooling unit has failed and needs replacement.

Why does my RV fridge work on propane but not electric?

The propane flame and the electric heating element do the same job, so if gas mode cools and electric doesn't, the cooling unit is fine — the electric heating element or its control circuit has failed. The element is an inexpensive cartridge that slides into the boiler pocket and is one of the easier RV fridge repairs.

How long does an RV refrigerator take to get cold?

Plan on 8–12 hours from warm, and up to 24 hours in very hot weather. Turn it on the night before a trip, load it with already-cold food, and leave room for air to circulate inside. A food-compartment temperature of 34–40°F is the goal.
