What does the sail switch do?
The sail switch is a small safety switch with a flap inside the furnace. When the blower spins up and moves enough air, the moving air pushes the sail closed, which tells the control board it's safe to open the gas valve and ignite. If the blower can't move enough air — for any reason — the sail never closes and the furnace will blow cold forever rather than fire with poor airflow.
Why airflow drops (and the furnace won't light)
- Weak 12V battery: the furnace blower needs strong battery voltage to spin up to full speed. A low house battery is the single most common reason the blower runs slow and the sail switch never closes — charge it first.
- Insect nests: mud daubers and spiders love the warm furnace exhaust and intake tubes and build nests right in them, choking the airflow. This is a classic, especially after the rig has sat.
- A dusty or stuck sail switch, a dirty blower wheel, or a partially blocked exhaust/intake on the outside of the rig.
How to clear it
Start with the battery — make sure it's fully charged and the connections are clean, then try the furnace. If the blower now spins up strong but still won't light, look for blockage. From outside, check the furnace exhaust and intake for mud-dauber nests and clear them with compressed air and a brush. Inside, a tech can check the sail switch contacts and the blower wheel for dust.
Don't ever jumper or bypass the sail switch to "make it run" — it's a safety device that prevents the furnace firing without airflow. If the switch is bad, replace it, don't defeat it.
When to bring in a tech
If the battery is strong, the tubes are clear, and the blower spins up but you still get no ignition, the issue may be the sail switch itself, the control board, the igniter, or the gas valve — propane work where it's worth having a tech confirm it safely. But check the battery and the bug nests first; they solve most no-ignition furnaces.
