RV AC Running But Not Cooling? Coils, Capacitors & Freeze-Ups

An RV air conditioner that runs but won't cool is rarely dead — most of the time it's starving for airflow or fighting a weak capacitor. Before you price a replacement unit, run through these checks. They take an afternoon, cost almost nothing, and fix the majority of "my AC quit cooling" calls.

First: measure the temperature split

Set a thermometer at the return-air intake (where the filter is) and another at the closest cold-air vent, run the AC ten minutes, and compare. A healthy rooftop unit delivers a 16–22°F drop between intake and output. If you're seeing that split on a 100° day, the AC is doing all it can — the real problem is heat soaking into the rig faster than 13,500 BTUs can pull it out.

If the split is under 15°F, keep going — something is genuinely wrong. If it's near zero and the compressor never kicks on (you'll hear only the fan), skip ahead to the capacitor section.

Why do dirty coils kill cooling?

The evaporator coil (inside, under the shroud) and condenser coil (facing outside air) move heat by passing air over their fins. A season of dust, pollen, and cottonwood fluff blankets those fins like insulation, and cooling drops off a cliff.

Kill power to the unit, pull the rooftop shroud, and gently clean both coils with a soft brush, compressed air blown the opposite direction of airflow, or a no-rinse foaming coil cleaner. Straighten bent fins with a fin comb. While you're up there, wash or replace the return-air filter — a clogged filter alone can cut output by a third and is the single most neglected item in RV cooling.

Is the evaporator freezing up?

Run the AC and pull the filter: if you see frost or a solid block of ice on the coil, the unit is freezing up. Ice on the coil blocks airflow completely, so the AC blows warm even though it's working hard.

Freeze-ups come from weak airflow (dirty filter or coil), running the fan on low in very humid weather, or low refrigerant. Shut the AC off and run the fan only until the ice melts, fix the airflow problem, then run the fan on high in humidity. If it keeps icing with clean coils and a clean filter, the refrigerant charge is likely low — and since rooftop RV units are sealed systems, that usually means replacement rather than a recharge.

The capacitor: the $20 part that mimics a dead AC

If the fan runs but the compressor won't start — or the unit hums, clicks, and trips the breaker — suspect the start or run capacitor. Capacitors give the compressor motor its kick, they weaken with age and heat, and they're the most common electrical failure on rooftop units.

A swollen, domed, or leaking capacitor is a confirmed kill. With power disconnected and the capacitor safely discharged (they hold a charge even unplugged — treat them with respect), a multimeter with a capacitance setting will show if it's dropped more than about 10% below its rated microfarads. Replacements match the µF and voltage rating printed on the can and cost $10–30.

When the compressor really is done

If the capacitors test good but the compressor draws locked-rotor amps, trips breakers instantly, or is dead silent with power confirmed at the unit, the compressor has likely failed — and on a sealed rooftop unit that means replacing the AC. On the bright side, swap-in replacements bolt to the same 14×14 roof opening, so labor is manageable.
